Comme la clarté molle et tiède d’un soir bleu
Convient seule aux baisers prolongés d’un adieu ;
Comme aux égarements d’une débauche amère
Il faut une nuit froide et noire de Brumaire ; 
Et comme pour conduire une vierge à l’autel 
Rien ne sied qu’un soleil de mai dans un beau ciel ; 
Ainsi, pour retrouver l'impression profonde 
De la mysticité redoutable du monde, 
J’aime, après un travail poussé jusqu’au matin, 
A voir le jour qui monte à l’horizon lointain, 
Pâle, mouillé des pleurs de la brume nocturne, 
Et la lune qui meurt dans l’aube taciturne.
